I ran norton 2009 and it was fine;none of the symtoms described. Also ran thew new McAfeee and it was fine. I thnik many times its the system and conflicts people ahve problems with. The free AVG that I ran on on e computer was always getting viuses that it did not catch because I think their definiton are slow compared to many. Different pweople and different results is what I see.
User ratings are far more useful than most website reviews or rankings. Most sites (cnet included) have constantly rated the pre Norton 2009 AV high despite it being crap.
And speaking of Norton 2009, had my fist run in with it yesterday on a clients machine, it didn't do much to change my opinion of NAV in general. Machine was randomly hanging, couldn't get the wireless to work to save my life, and the wired connection kept dropping. Uninstalled NAV, machine ran like a dream. Ran a couple scans, no viri or malware to blame the odd behavior on, just Norton doing what it's always done.
I find this fascinating since I've installed Norton Internet Security 2009 on 6 computers so far with absolutely no problems whatsoever. 5 XP (one Pro) and one Vista 64 bit. Both wired and wireless.

One more thing, I was told that it is very difficult to remove Norton completely from the computer and that sometimes one has to download a specific programme to completly uninstall Norton. Any suggestions on that?

Pre-2009 versions were horrendous. Not only were they resource hogs, refused to shut down all parts when you told the OS to shut down, but removing all the associated files was an absolute nightmare.
Keep in mind were talking about version 2009 here and I promise you it is an entirely different beast.
I was one who would have told you to avoid Norton like the plague b4 version 2009. Now I highly recommend it.
Norton does have a way of hanging around. Everyday it pops up on my screen trying to run scans but I just cancel it everyday! I haven't a clue how to get rid of it but it's not a big problem just canceling it daily! Ha!
I just downloaded the new 8.5 AVG onto my computer yesterday. I have been happy with the previous AVG I had so I will see how I like this new one now!!
You won't.
Running two AV's is not a good idea. They will see the others activity as viral and you wil have problems.

mcaffee at home just does its own thing; it doesn't pop up in the middle of a program for some kind of update alert. it does all that on its own.
i had AVG once; m-bam identified it as malware. i've had a few IT guys tell me that AVG free IS malware.

Which version? I ask because I never get any pop-ups or notices from my NIS V2009. I spent the first couple of weeks checking on it because I thought it wasn't working.
