Depending on your budget, I would stick with Canon. They make quality cameras and produce good pictures. They have models as low as $100 to as high as $450 for a point-and-shoot, so you have some flexibility.

Be careful if you buy used from Amazon, as it's generally through the marketplace. Make sure you check the feedback from the seller and make sure they are reputable and have no major issues from other buyers.

Your computer will recognize just about any camera if you plug it into the USB port (and they all come with cables to do that). You can install their software, but I found it much easier to skip it and just use Windows to import the pictures. Using a card reader is easier, if you have a port, but if not, I personally wouldn't spend the money on an adapter, since it's not really necessary.

I will agree on the quality. We have an SD 500 Powershot from Canon and have been extremely pleased. If you want to see some pictures taken with it go to the DC Forum and look for "My weekend in DC". The pictures you see were mostly taken from the second level of a Double Decker bus, most while moving, and cropped/blown up for detail. They were not taken at the highest setting possible.

Not too tacky.

You can get the same results from other brands, but this camera has been carried everywhere in my pocket for years and as a result taken quite a beating. It still performs flawlessy.

All of my digital cameras have allowed me to use a USB cable and plug them into my PC. Windows thinks it's another drive, and I can just copy the files off where I want them. So does Linux for the most part.
