I was a loyal AVG user until it started causing Firefox to crash. Regrettably, switched to Avast which I find confounding but I guess it works.

Thanks everyone. Like I said I've been using Avast and I'm use to its format. Actually, I have no complaints at all concerning Avast but was very curious about AVG. It appears both are very good programs.

What I like about Avast its very quick on-the-fly response to scanning a file on the desktop (or anywhere else for that matter). Right-click, Scan, Done. Avira and AVG were very slow to respond in this manner. Also I have no "providers" running in the background.
