Will be moving to Manchester CT wondering where the best and safest neighborhoods are? Am looking to buy or possible rent for a while. Have a family.

Thanks for any help

Do you want to stay in Manchester itself or be in a town nearby? It will depend on how much you can afford to spend and what you want for your money. Most of Manchester is nice. A few areas are not as desirable as others but nothing is really bad. Jay

We do not mind living in nearby areas. My husbands work is in Manchester and we are hoping to be able to still get DSL or fast speed internet for my work. can afford between 1600 and 1900 a month for rent but need at least 3 bedrooms. Just really hoping to find nice family neighborhood.

Thanks

Are schools important to you? If not, you should not have a problem. towns with higheer rated school systems will cost more.

Manchester itself is a good choice to start. If you want highly ranked schools try nieghboring Glastonbury. South Windsor is also nice and rural Bolton is beautiful. Check craigslist.com or Realtor.com for listings. Jay

I agree with Jay, but just make sure you don't live in the area between I-84 and I-384. It's not pleasant.

LOL That's basically the entire city.

Not sure which area specifically you are thinking of, but the entire city is not "not pretty"...no more less so than Rockville. Few blocks off Exit 2 on 384 and a few blocks behind Maine Street are "not that great" but still "not that bad" just more poor than ghetto or dangerous.

OP are you looking for a house or an apt? That will make a differnece. $1600.00 per month can put you in a new, 3 bed luxury apt in a nice area of Manchester NO problem.

As for high speed access, it's pretty wide spread here with a solid infrastructure so you won't have any problem even in the more rural areas.

I pointed this out on another thread where an out-of-state reader who was considering Manchester read the I-84/I-384 comment and believed it. I said I knew I sould have jumped on this because it basically covers 3/4 of the city. There are MANY nice areas in between and very FEW that are not nice. The person that made this statement indicated they were comparing it to Farmington Valley. I told them they need to get out and see the rest of the world. Jay

Default Thank you for the help

Thanks for your response. I can probably go as high as 1900 a month but am hoping to get a house to rent. I have one school age child but I homeschool so schools are not an issue for us. I just want a nice neighborhood for families. I am coming from the west coast and our state crime rate(here) is much higher then CT so I see that as a positive overall for us to be moving there

Thanks again

Oh you can find a home for rent in Manchester for that...I'll DM you the name of a realtor who can help.

As for crime in CT and Manchester: You'll laugh once you get here as to how minimal it really is...really, you will.

I would not recommend Manchester's schools...there are a few stand-outs among the elementary schools (Martin Elementary in particular) but over-all, many other towns in the area have far better schools (South Windsor, Ellington, Glastonbury, Tolland, Bolton). I say this based on my experiences teaching in Manchester, as well as several friends who have children in Manchester schools.
