Hi-
Someone mentioned on another thread that the west side of fairfield is very WASPY and the east side is more Catholic and Jewish. Is this accurate? My sister is considering a move from an affluent village in lower Westchester. The taxes are out of control- reaching 20k for a starter home, but the above is a bit disturbing if true. She would like to live in a place where many religions live inthe same area- where it is mixed- as where she is now. Where no one could care less what religion there neighbor is. If she is not a WASP- would kids feel out of place in schools on West side or is this total exaggeration? I cannot imagine that in Southport, which borders heavily populated Westport- there are no Jewish families? seems very odd. Anyways- she is interested in a few homes zoned for the Riverfield school. How does this school compare against others in terms of real estate value? Would it be very desireable, middle, etc? Sorry for all the questions! No one in our family is too familiar w CT- so thanks for any insight!
I wouldn't take that too seriously. There are no synogogues in Southport or on the west side of town that I know of. There are at least 2 on the east side. Southport has a Congregational church and an Episcopal church. But I doubt that anybody cares all that much about what religion anybody is. The term "waspy" doesn't really mean the same thing that it used to. I certainly don't think it's any worse, in terms of religious consciousness, than any place in Westchester.
You will find people of all religions throughout the town. I doubt anyone would feel out of place for religous reasons. There are more Jewish people on the east side of town because that is where the two Synogogues are located as well as being closer to a couple in nearby Bridgeport. Many live nearby so they can walk to services. There are Catholics all over town as well but there are more on the east side because there are neighborhoods that were primarily Italian and Hungarian from many years ago there.
All of the schools in Fairfield are excellent. Riverfield is in the Mill Plain section of town which is a very nice suburban area that is close to town and the train station. It is an excellent area to live and would be a good place to buy a home. Jay
