HARTFORD — More people are leaving Connecticut for other parts of the United States than are moving here from other states.

The state saw approximately 19,540 more departures than arrivals in 2011, according to the latest census estimates on interstate migration.

Connecticut had the seventh-highest percentage of residents moving out of state in 2012, according to the 2012 edition of United Van Lines migration study.

United Van Lines handled 3,155 moves into and out of Connecticut last year, said Melissa Sullivan, communications manager for the mover. Of those moves, 1,991 were out of Connecticut to another state, or 56 percent, while 1,564 customers moved here from elsewhere, Sullivan said.

I'm not doubting it, but is this based on United Van Lines numbers or real numbers?

We had this same discussion last year when United published their list back then. United is a moving company and bases their findings on their own statistic which may not be entirely accurate. Jay

If this data comes from United, there's a huge sample bias involved. A lot of first-time buyers and those moving from apts to homes (think coming from NYC, etc) don't have a lot of stuff and don't hire big companies like United. I doubt they publish it (too lazy to google), but if you could get change of address data from the post office, that'd be interesting data.

Any demographic/survey survey from a private company is going to have inaccuracies/bias. Statistics 101.

I see growth in some Southern cities and a lot of remote areas. What does that say?

19k is bad, but still trails the 90s pace of 250k (which was BLS data based) in a decade.a 25k annual pace. Part of the 19k might be prior years want to moves who held back until housing prices at least partially recovered, and until other parts of the nation started seeing the economy pick up. Many regions are 6% or lower unemployment now-that was not true 2 years prior.

So the 19k should be monitored closely, and is far more troublesome if 2013 sees similar data.
