At the recommendation of our local Thai/Vietnamese place that closed (Pho Mekong, RIP), I just went to the most fantastic Vietnamese grocery store on the corner of Norman and Wood in Bridgeport, and it felt like finding a gold mine. Can anyone suggest other gems in Bridgeport, either for prepared foods or ingredients? Thanks so much!

I wish I could. I'll be reading this thread with interest to see if others suggest some places because I'd love to try some.

If you're feeling brave and its daylight out, there is a little-known hole in the wall called Pho Saigon on Iranistan in Bridgeport. I went a couple of times and the food was great. The atmosphere was terrible, the neighborhood is scary to some....

They serve a mean bahn mi. It's very inexpensive. It's mostly Vietnamese eating in there and I take that as a good sign. Just don't park too far from the restaurant.

I'm not into Thai cuisine, but King & I has been successfully serving up Thai food out of a small place on the Bridgeport/Stratford/Trumbull line for many, many years now. The neighborhood is secure.

How far down Iranistan Ave. is it from North Avenue?

About 5 or 6 blocks. It's a little closer to Fairfield Avenue.

Not such a great neighborhood, but not as bad as the east side.

I'll probably skip it. In Bridgeport, I pretty much limit myself to Black Rock, the North End and the Brooklawn area. I don't venture into the West End or the East Side very often.

Mlassoff - thanks! That's just the kind of information I was looking for. And here I thought I'd have to head to NYC or Brooklyn Chinatown for a banh mi...

Also, a new Pho place opened on the Post Road in Westport. It's less than five miles from the Bridgeport line. If you're coming from Bridgeport it will be on your left side before you get to Maple Avenue. I believe it is past Tiger Bowl and Stop n Shop.

If you try it, let me know what you think. It is on my list for my next trip home to Westport.

It is five blocks down from North Avenue and just two blocks in from Park Avenue. That area is not bad during the daytime. I would not be worried. Jay
