Ethanol is a bit costly to produce (and requires a good amount of fossil fuels to produce) and isn't 100% clean, there are still emissions. There's also issues with over farming and whatnot.

The New England part of the route is unlikely to get built for a few reasons and seems to be the butt of jokes within the Rail community.

The Northeast is not as sprawly as the rest of the US. Railway towns in the Coastal Northeast outgrew Auto towns the past decade. The Trend at least in the Northeast is making those towns dense....around the train stations. As for Ethanol i don't think thats a very good idea , it will put a strain on the food supply and is expensive.

I think we should stop talking about rail funding for awhile. Our governor is about to **** away a fortune on a major league pork project known as the New Britain-Hartford Busway which will effectively kill alot of the proposed rail plans in the works, I'm sad to say.

This isn't exactly his fault. The busway won out, and for planning to begin again all the federal (and much of the state bonding) would be reduced to nil and another 20 years added to the project. Instead of repaving that they should have planned for the BRT with the ability to run on rails, but alas it doesn't seem like that was what was designed.

What I find weird about the busway is that in the USA for the most part the public thinks public transportation is for poor people. (especially buses) Knowing this, who's going to ride that busway? Even if it was convenient for middle class people they won't be on it - I can tell you that right now.

Trains on the other hand are viewed more favorably in the public's eyes.

Yea , My Aussie friends don't understand why that is....its common place for Aussies to use Public Transit in the Suburbs...

I thought the public opinion in America regarding public transportation was common knowledge. (i.e it's for poor people) With the way these politicians talk about this busway though I guess it's not. I think people should stop being afraid to ride a bus , alot people in suburbs without Rail service ride them at least West of NYC....this seems to be less common east of NYC. Your no more unsafe riding a bus then a train... Bus Ridership also makes up for a bulk of the Transportation use , although it should even out with Rail ridership by 2030.
