We need to know more specifics, like your price range.

I would avoid East/West Haven if you want surburban. The Short Beach district of western Branford is peaceful and has its own exit/entrance on I95 making it VERY close to New Haven.

If you need to be within commuting distance to Hartford as well as New Haven, then I would stay along the I-91 corridor. Wallingford would be a good location. Lots of housing options, good schools, nice parks and lots of stores, restaurants and entertainment options. Plus Wallingford has the lowest electricity rates in the State.

If you want to be a little closer to Hartford, check into Middletown. It too has a lot of housing options plus a nice downtown area with interesting shops, restaurants and movie theaters. I would recommend looking for an apartment in the Westfield area which is right off I-91. There are a number of larger complexes there with nice apartments in your price range. Check craigslist.com for listings. Good luck, Jay

The Morris Cove section of New Haven is nice and quiet. Westville as well.
