Hi,

I'm going to be taking a weekend trip into NYC (Fri-Sun) with a few friends. We're scattered around the New England area so we were thinking of meeting up in New Haven or possibly Stamford to take the MTA into the city.

New Haven would be the best meeting location for us but if the ride in from Stamford is a lot quicker/easier we would consider that.

Can anyone help with recommendations?

The Ride in from Stamford is easier , less stops between there and Grand Central , if you meet in New Haven you have to travel the whole line. A Express train really wouldn't make that big a difference from New Haven. Both stations are easily accessible from I-95.

You'll also have a lot more options regarding departure and arrival times from Stamford. This way if say, you are on your way to Grand Central and something catches your eye, you don't have to worry about running to get the train because the next one out isn't for another hour.

Personally, I like to drive in much better, but to each their own.

Agree w JV about the drive. Because parking is cheap on weekends in NY (esp midtown East) driving is way more effecient... time and money-wise .... than a train, especially for a group. Only time I take the train on weekends is if I'm partying and don't want to motor back with a buzz.

It does depend on what time you are going in on Friday and how much driving you want to do. If you are going on Friday morning, you would probably be better off going to New Haven. The drive down from New Haven to Stamford can be difficult. If you are going down in the evening, then you can do either station without a problem though you may hit some traffic around Stamford.

Also note, you will not be taking the MTA. The trains for Connecticut are run by the Metro North Railroad which is owned by MTA. Jay

I did. Then my car got towed. $180 bucks plus the $115 parking ticket (slapped on my car 10 minutes before the tow).

Train it is!

It is still considered the MTA.

LOL That sucks.

Next time go into those buildings all over midtown painted all white and lite up bright that say "Park here" and spend $25 for the day. You'll have no worries.

South Norwalk is good too. It depends on what time of day you're going. If you're going in the morning at rush hour, just take New Haven (or Milford). Otherwise South Norwalk or Stamford.

I drive in 99% of the time because it's so much faster at non-rush hour times, and you're not at the mercy of waiting for the train on the way home.

I only had the parking ticket problem once, and learned pretty quickly how to read the signs on the street. It's easy once you get a hang of it. There's also the ever prevalent parking garages, but I'm usually able to find free parking in the right places on weekends.
