I'm from CT and have never heard anyone say the word bum in reference to butt or rear end.

I hear butt, rear end and ass more often, bum is used more to describe a loser kind of person that doesn't contribute to society. But I've had heard bum used to describe butts a few times.

I don't think it's specific to a certain area, it depends on the person really.
