Smiles, popular Milford fun spot, closes doors - News - The Bulletin

Smiles, popular Milford fun spot, closes doors

MILFORD — To Tim Nash, home gaming brought Smiles down.

“It’s the Xbox and PlayStation, along with competition from Chuck E. Cheese, that eventually closed this Smiles location,” said Nash, a route supervisor for Amusement Consultants LTD, owner of the now-closed Smiles Entertainment Center.

A spokesman for the New Rochelle, N.Y., business could not be reached late Wednesday, but signs on the building announced Smiles had gone out of business, and Nash was wheeling an ATM out of the business as he spoke Wednesday.

Smiles, at 1607 Boston Post Road, had been a mainstay for local children and teenagers who flocked there for 25 years for arcade games, batting cages, boat rides, miniature golf, lasertron, pool tables and birthday parties. Now, signs on the building also say “We are sorry for any inconvenience. We thank you for your patronage.”

City Economic Development Director Robert Gregory said he drove by the business recently and saw cars in the parking lot, but he wasn’t surprised to learn Smiles had closed.

“The last time I was there with kids, half of the machines did not work,” Gregory said. “I didn’t forecast a long life for them to operate.”

But, he said, for the countless people who grew up playing at Smiles, the closure is “news.”

“It’s unfortunate,” Gregory said. “It was a nice little entertainment place.”

Gregory said he doubts the sizable lot on Route 1 will be empty for long.

“This presents a new opportunity for things to happen, even in these economic times,” Gregory said. “As soon as it officially becomes a marketable piece of property, there will be some demand.”

So what's left? The Game Room at CT Golf Land in Vernon? I conquered Galaga at that arcade.

Good riddance. That place has been a dump for years. It hasn't been any good since the 90's. A total opposite to the upscale shopping center across the street. The only families that went there anymore were pretty low class. Gross place and it's no wonder it went out of business. A Dave & Buster's should be built in its place!

I didn't realize that place was still there. I grew up in the 80s and 90s when it was Milford Amusement Center. Anyone else remember their catchy radio jingle? (We've got the fun!)
