Take a look at the path of Gloria and Irene...with Irenes satelite image. Little colored lines are the models projections. Irene is more south than Gloria was.
Yea, the path will be Gloria-like but the more southern track will catch landfall in the Carolinas..I still think it will be more like Floyd. A ride on the coastal plain which is not good news for CT....

I also think they may be under forecasting the strength. There is NOTHING to stop this thing into growing into a monster now. Traditionally if forecasting is weak anywhere, its in the understanding the strength growth of these type hurricanes.

Any landfalls north of Georgia probably means a lot of rain and (if it hugs the coast instead of going straight inland) some decent wind for the Northeast.

I agree about the strength. What was weakening it if it took a Florida path was the time it would spend over Hispanola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic). But now the only land it touches before hitting the US is the small islands of the Bahamas.

This a dead ringer to Floyd!!!

Frightening how exact the 2 tracks look.. This does not bode well if it stays the course... Right now the models show it further East than the forecast..almost right on this path...

Bertha is even closer. I just remember Floyd so well. The whole area by the Danbury mall and airport were completely flooded. The road was under 8-10 feet of water. It was terrible.

So I need to eat crow Mr. Cambium. Although the track will not bring a landfalling storm to CT the effects will be severe enough to warrant strong attention. Although you sounded the bell early I think you may right on this one. This is no Earl.

Thank You ... appreciate that.. There has been 8 other storms before Irene (even one behind her now) but I noticed the setup for this one was not good for the coast so I decided to mention it.

Lets hope she gets tired or wants to go fishing.

2pm Update: Same sustained winds of 80mph but pressure is up..she could be weakening a little.

Irene now forecasted to become "Major" crossing the Bahama's and into SC.

www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCDAT4+shtml/221504.shtml

"SINCE THE CORE OF THE HURRICANE IS NOT
FORECAST TO MOVE DIRECTLY OVER THE HIGH TERRAIN OF HISPANIOLA...AND
THE OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS ARE QUITE FAVORABLE... THE
OFFICIAL FORECAST CALLS FOR INTENSIFICATION...AND MAKES IRENE A
CATEGORY 3 HURRICANE AS IT MOVES ACROSS THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS"

Very interested to see if this track keeps moving to the east.
