I find that I get the best forecasts right here. TWC and local news are all doomsayers. Going out to hunt for food at the stores today and then make sandbags for my basement window.....it tends to flood.......

Regarding my thoughts on it not staying Cat 1 all the way to here, a friend of mine who is a NY earth science teacher noted 2008's Hurricane Hanna. Was never more than a Cat 1, only a tropical storm off any part of the US, but it actually strengthened in the Mid-Atlantic and was almost a hurricane off LI where for any part of the US was the point it was at its strongest.

As I said last night by the time it hits CT, it will be a tropical storm watch at best. Hitting more land then origionally thought will weaken it even further (its already gotten substanially weaker in the last 24 hours). Will be heavy rain, moderate wind (50 MPH+), flash flood warnings if you live on rivers or wetlands, and a potential to lose power for 4 or 5 days. Don't believe the hype!! This is why I stopped watching the news, and get my news from the newspaper instead, these bozo's will say anything and I mean literally anything for them to get viewes.

11am update from NHS shows a direct NYC landfall tomorrow morning as a minimal hurricane, and interestingly, it going over MONTREAL, CANADA as a 70 mph Tropical Storm:

HUrricane thread under weather for preparations, hurricane survival kits etc.

**Water, 3 gallons/person/day....flashlight/batteries, cash, dry/canned foods, baby and pet food and items...
etc.

Don't sneer...potential for devastation with Irene, no matter what the category. (from NC native and current coastalSC resident)

Stoking up words like "making landfall", heavy flooding, catastrophe does not help and is mere sabre rattling

Katrina was a category 5. And this is just a category 1 all along, as per current projection. That's the lowest on the simpson scale. I'm betting it's gonna pass fine with some large amount of rainfall and whistling and I'm still going to church tomorrow
Katrina was only a Cat 3 when it hit New Orleans. And, again, just b/c this isn't a higher category storm does not mean that it will not be devastating. Be prepared for power outages and flooding.

I'm gonna go to walmart and buy empty plastic containers, those huge ones and fill them up with water from my tap. Just in case the water taps run dry for a couple days or more.

I'm not in the least bit worried. Like I said, my disaster tolerance is pretty high. I've lived in a badass place much of my life. But I hope this one passes with just rainfall and such. This culture of people is not mentally disaster prepared, as I can tell from the panic and terrified faces.
