Yeah, thats a first for me... Even the Post Christmas blizzard bottomed at 961 and was considered a Cat3. Irene isnt spinning fast enough..so I think the pressure is deep & strong within the system but the winds and moisture is not.

December 2010 North American blizzard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"On December 27, 2010, the storm had deepened to 961 millibars (28.4 inHg), equal in pressure to that found in a Category 3 hurricane Several synoptic factors contributed to the intensity of this blizzard."

I just went down to the beach. The road is already partially flooded and nothing has happened yet. Scary.

The wind is picking up. Waves are growing. I'd say about 4-5' breaking waves right now. They're going to get huge.

Very small branches down (twigs basically), leaves. Most houses dark near water, presumably evacuated. VERY few boarded up.

I wonder for how long I can go down there safely? Probably not long.

Weather Channel expects Tropical Force in NYC by 5 a.m., so I suspect very little time to safely be in area of beaches. Part of why its just cat 1 is its force is spread out over such a vast region; they said its land mass is in same ballpark as all of Europe.
