I'm still amazed the swell was that great from a weak Tropical storm.

Best way to visualize what a Hurricane does over the water is to think of a Plunger. It basically pulls up and pushes down on the water creating those large waves in the open water and pushing the water against the shore.

There's a stat I gotta find out... Whats the max wave height reported in the open seas from irene... I think I heard 1 buoy reporting 25' waves.
I saw reports of 30' when it was in open water.

Neither did my in-laws. When talking to them about getting out my MIL's reply was "well, we'll watch the water and if it starts coming up, we'll leave". I was like "no no no, it doesn't work like that...think tsunami. It's a wall of water heading in like a big wave. You won't have time to scream."

I disagree with them that it was the first storm to threaten metro NYC since Gloria. Floyd did not drop to Trop Storm status until around Cape May, NJ and there were "Hurricane Warnings" posted by the NWS for the metro NYC area then too (and like Floyd, Irene ended up being a 65mph Trop Storm when the center reached this area). I know from the OKX website's "records" section that the NWS/NOAA has made errors like this before. They should say "first since Floyd in 1999 and only 2nd since Gloria" (I don't remember if NYC metro had hurricane warnings for Bob, I know eastern LI/eastern CT did).

Yeah its weird they put first "storm" to threaten. Something doesnt makes sense about that.

As far as Floyd, I think it was considered extra tropical which means it lost its Tropical characteristics around NYC. But then again so did Irene...there was a cold core (temps dropped as center came through) so that indicates extra tropical but its not confirmed yet. But why say "storm" they should put "Tropical" or "hurricane" but then you have your point that Floyd threatened the area as well. Technicals drive you nuts sometimes.. :-)

Just to recap my post above on the damage: Here's the text version.

9/3/11
~ Damage now stands at 941 broken poles,
~ 3,404 sections of downed wire,
~ 623 broken transformers
~ 2,045 closed roads across our service territory.
~ We have helped clear 1,526 roads so far
~ another 519 still remain blocked.
~ Today 1,730 crews will work across Conn
~ In some areas, a complete rebuild of the system is necessary.

Default Boy, this storm, Irene did a LOT of damage!

Here is a website I found that shows a lot of damage done to houses & towns all up & down the East Coast.
Whew! Irene you're a bad girl!

I just visited a town that had been out of power until Wednesday afternoon. Poor Glastonbury. They lost a lot of business not havin power for 4 days. I am hearing there will be flooding down near Portland parts of Middletown too, from all the rain.
Are ANY of the beach parks open at ALL in Connecticut this weekend?

Just came back from the coast of Milford...Wow. Concrete walls broken, sink holes, people throwing out household items, decks and boardwalks dismantled, Sand in the streets.
