Hi,

Would anyone have recommendations for people doing kitchen remodeling in the Stratford-Shelton-Milford area? We're looking at replacing our counters+backsplash+sink, possibly with some changes to the light fixtures as well.

I used Service Magic for some bathroom remodeling two years ago, but wasn't too happy with the person we chose. Once hired, we kept getting different people showing up for work at our home every day. He barely came by thrice in 6 days. I'm sure there are plenty of good providers listed on Service Magic (and Angie's List) as well, but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations based on personal experience.

Thanks

Check out the folks at marble.com - they have a huge facility right over the GWB in Jersey where you can pick out your own granite slab. They do the measurements at your house, create a template and you can pick and choose how you want it laid out (have the sink area cut out a bad spot in the granite, for example). The installers were very quick and professional, made no mess, and the guy who did the grout-work was an artist - he spent more than 20 minutes mixing dyes in to get it to match perfectly so you don't see any seams. They typically come with a free sink. Oh, and the price was less than half of anything I found locally (I'm in Fairfield), and was also cheaper than corian or any of the other manufactured stuff.

As for backsplash - go to a local tile store (there's a good one in Derby on Main St - a quick Google Maps search brought up Oliwa Home Supply - not sure if this was it) and see if they can recommend someone to do the install. My father-in-law and I did it ourselves - wasn't horribly difficult when you use those little rubber spacers. You can rent a tile saw at home depot for the odd-sized corners and whatnot.

For light fixtures, I'm partial to Valley Lighting in Ansonia - good pricing, very helpful sales people, and a huge selection. We've bought all of our lights (interior and exterior) here.

Thanks toddb, much appreciated. I'll definitely loook up marble.com and the rest. Derby's not far from us in N.Stratford, so we'll probably go looking for the tile store this weekend.
