Any suggestions on neighborhoods to check out or places to go to get a feel for the area?
As someone who makes that drive every day (Milford-Norwalk), it isn't going to make a commute by car any easier, if that's what he's thinking. That's going to be awful from either town. The thing is, traffic doesn't really start until the west side of Bridgeport, so you're cruising through Milford and Stratford, and eastern Bridgeport. So you're saving maybe 3-4 minutes on the highway. I would NOT count on being able to do that drive. It's going to be hell on some days. Train is where it's at.

On the train, it's a difference of 5 minutes, tops.

In the end, go where you like, the commute won't be any different.

My husband commutes to Stamford from Stratford. We live in the Paradise Green section of town, and he walks to the train station and then it's a bit over 30 min train ride. This part of town is really great---we have great neighbors, can walk to parks, schools, restaurants, and stores, and we love the little festivals on the Green.

My favorite area is the east side of the Green (so around Wilcoxson/Brewster Pond/etc) but I know the north end of town is highly regarded. I also like the area around Boothe Park.
