I don't think it has anything to do with it. If anything, the market is LOW for that kind of access.

I think our housing costs are driven by demand and average salaries. What pushes it a bit further is property taxes. Example: Someone wants to purchase a home for 230K with 20K down. On a 30 year at 4.25% that's only $1065.00 per month. Once you add in property taxes, insurance and PMI it's about $1800.00 per month. That's a huge jump.

Relative to cost of living, Hartford is probably the wealthiest city in the United States.

Southern Connecticut is the wealthiest city in the United States. See: //www.city-data.com/forum/21042571-post34.html.

However Hartford may be slightly wealthier if you consider cost of living.

Exactly well said. 2 hours away is a 4 hour round trip and that's not including traffic. I haven't been to manhattan or boston in years like many people I know who live in the area. It's the same thing in outer long island which is much closer to nyc than central ct. Oh and manhattan isn't 2 hours from hartford. It can take over an hour just to cross a bridge/birdge and another hour or more to get to lower manhattan from the northern part whether it's the west side highway or the fdr. Really need to take the train to go into nyc.

I don't either. Hartford has a LOT of white collar jobs that fuel its economy. That has nothing to do with New York or Boston.

Stamford is much more expensive to live in.

For Hartford County's issues, I always thought it had the perfect intersection between cost of living and salaries.

And Aerospace (Carrier, Pratt, Kaman, Hamilton Sunstrand, Otis, UTC power) Finance (ING, Hartford Financial service [fortune 500] etc) and a host of other corporate headquarters such as Gerber Scientific, Loctite, Stanley, Northeast Utilities etc.

Those are the giants. There are a ton of others that don't have revenue in the billions but are still strong.
