Hello All,

I have a pet project trying to document our 250+ year old home's history. I've hit a road block as our land records from Town Hall do not reveal street names. Nor do maps I've found of our area from the 19th century.

Does anyone know where to find out what a street name was called prior?

We live in Rocky Hill on what is currently called Old Main Street. Before being called Old Main, it was called Main Street per the 1940 census. Before that, I believe it was called the Middletown Turnpike based purely on circumstantial information.

Ideas?

Try the historical society in your town.

You've checked the deeds for your home, going back through every owner ? I would be surprised if they did not list a street name. You want to read past the the basic deed, to the schedule "A", or legal description that goes with it.

If that fails, ask the Rocky Hill Historical Society, which is located on Old Main St. They will know.

Thank you for responding. I have visited the Rocky Hill Historical Society once before and was not impressed. They seemed to be unknoweldgeble at that time when I asked similar questions. Perhaps I visited on an off day. Next weekend I'll try them again.

Regarding the deeds, the recent ones, for this plot of land are decent enough, however, when your traveling back in time, the deeds become more vauge; here's an excerpt:

...bounded east partly on land of William Griswold and in part on a highway, north on land of William Griswold in part and on land of Elijah Robbins and the heirs of Richard Robbins, west on land of Asahel Savage, south on a highway...

As you can see, the description is vauge going only by the neighbors and not the street. I'll also try the engineer's office in Town Hall to see if they can give any light.
