Kind of hard not to notice. Are you noticing this for the first time?

when i attended the U of Bridgeport from 80-82 there was the State Street Diner and another more elaborate diner that was pretty cool (had a tan/gold color scheme). Famous Pizza on Park Ave had awesome food.

one of my college acquaintances was actually mugged sitting at the counter at Famous Pizza. venturing to Pop's grocery store on University and Lafayette was a rather tense experience, it was always desolate.

Overall crime is down in the past 5 years , Violent crime for the most part has been pushed into the West and South Wards , while the East , Central , and North see typical petty crime , some overnight break in's are common near the Transportation arteries along with Robberies which is common elsewhere but overall crime in those sections of the city is down.

They often do. In fact, if you look at many cities that's frequently the case. 84 did the same thing to Hartford: the highway may be effective at allowing motorists to travel, but it cut the city to ribbons. There's nothing that can be done about it now, the highways are here to stay, but if we have the ability to make improvements to the areas immediately surrounding the highways that have been neglected this long, I'd love to see it happen.
I-84 is being placed in a Tunnel and the street grid will be restored , it will cost 2 billion but generate a return of upwards of 5 billion in developments and investments. Same will happen in New Haven hence why their spending money to rip up a stub...Trenton , Philadelphia , Newark , The Oranges , Paterson , New York City , Portland , Baltimore , Syracuse , and Springfield all plan on removing some highways or covering them in key areas....which restores the grid through parkscape.

No, they weren't. Maybe crime wise, but they are very different cities.

The 34 project in New Haven isn't costing much. It's a small patch of "highway" and they had developers lined up before they started. Putting 84 into a tunnel would be an insane proposition that will never happen. It would be nice if 95 went into a tunnel in Stamford and New Haven too while we're at it - linking their waterfronts directly to downtown. Not gonna happen in our lifetimes.
