Yeah - welcome to CT (and CA, NY, NJ, MA): one of the states with the highest tax burden.

Did you register your car here yet?

While the public schools here are excellent, single young people like yourself don't get to take advantage of it. In fairness, CT has the highest Human Development Index (health, wealth and education) in the nation and one of the highest in the world. But we also have, statistically, the highest wealth gap in the nation as well. Super wealthy suburbs and very poor cities.

Unfortunately, a lot of our tax dollars comes out of the pockets of those in the super wealthy suburbs and goes into the pockets of those in the very poor urban cities.

30% Ha! You're a lightweight

Just kidding.

Taxes are high here. Part of it pays to give state employees a fair standard of living, good schools, and, unfortunately, retirement for those same state employees.

How much do I pay in taxes? Too much! The reason my weight is so low isn't because I've been shedding pounds - it's because my wallet is alot lighter after the state gets their hands on my paychecks.

It's not the registration, but the property tax you will pay on the car that is a kicker. Enjoy!

We don't have annual car fees like annual registration or wheel taxes as some states do.

We're worse. We pay annual personal property tax on cars . How much you'll pay depends on the worth of your car and the town you live in.

You first have to check to see what your town's mill rate is ( the rate of taxation). The tax assessor will take the value of your car and tax you on 70% of that value times the town's mill rate.

Let's say your town's mill rate is 25 and your car is worth $20,000. 70% of $ 20,000 is $ 14,000.

$ 14,000 times the mill rate of 25 (.025 ) is $ 350.00. That's your annual tax. Obviously it should go down as your car gets older and if you buy a new car, you'll get walloped.

In 2012 I paid $400.00 MORE in taxes than in 2011, same vehicles, one year older. That was an unpleasant surprise.

Poodlecamper

DH & I had the same unpleasant surprise with one of our vehicles. Or as the town assessor said - " the price of used cars is going up, up ,up, not down. You just can't win.

Too much. And they'll keep going up and up and up. Just wait till you have a house, if you don't already. You ate either going to be able to over pay for a nice home in a nice town and have lower taxes, or a decent home in not so great town and still over pay for a house but have much higher property taxes. You can't win in this state unless you happen to be a state employee or wealthy
