What is being done to remedy this constant backup along I-91?

Heading north on I-91, there's ALWAYS at least a one mile delay to exit 29. Even when the rest of 91 is empty, the bridge is backed up.

Just saying, I-84 through Hartford is MUCH worse than I-91. CTDOT is rebuilding I-84 first before fixing I-91.

This backup has been a problem almost since the day it was built 25 years ago. The problem is that the ramp from I-91 northbound to the Charter Oak Bridge Eastbound is only one lane. It should have been two lanes since this is the major connection between I-91 and I-84 to Boston. ConnDOT does have a project on their books to fix this but it is very expensive given that the ramp is part of the bridge and there is an exit immediately on the other side of the bridge. Jay

Yeah, why even attempt to fix an interchange that not only causes constant (sometimes 20+ minute) delays, but also creates safety issues? Do you not realize the connection between congestion and safety? But, yeah...I guess I'm only 'complaining'

Believe me, you don't want them to "fix" anything. Everything they've ever "fixed" on the Merritt has ended up being a disaster.

What's the alternative? Take I-91 North to Trumbull Street (Exit 32B), loop over I-84 on Main Street, go left down Morgan Street and get onto I-84 East there? Yikes!

Two options--

Get off at Brainard Airport-- Will dump you on to the same connector that puts you on 84 as the Charter Oak Bridge Exit.

You can also get off at Rte 3 in Glastonbury, hit Rte 2 in East Hartford and end up on 84 East. That's my favorite way to go. Never hit traffic and its only about a half mile to a mile longer than the Charter Oak Bridge Rte.

If going from 84 to 91S-- Never use the first exit on to I 91 south. Follow the sign to Brainard Airport and it will put you on 91s without the waiting in line.

If you ever get stuck in that traffic jam: Get off exit 27 (the exit for Brainard airport), and make a U-turn at the traffic light to get back going the opposite direction. That ramp will lead you directly onto 84.

By the time you get off that long exit ramp and make the u-turn to get back on the highway, you will be behind where you started off. What ever happened to just waiting instead of being a frantic maniac trying to get ahead of everyone??? It's amusing watching everyone freak out and swerve between lanes whenever people slow down for traffic.
