I am taking a postdoc at Yale next year while my wife is considering one at Stony Brook.
We are considering living in Bridgeport and have me commute by train to Yale and her by ferry to Stony Brook.
Is this a reasonable plan? Any better places to live for people in our situation?

I lived in Port Jeff for a while when my (not at the time) wife lived in CT when we were in college. Safe to say I have a lot of experience making this commute, albeit to Colchester, not NH.

The ferry is expensive. There are lower "commuter" rates, but taking a car on the ferry is no cheap ordeal and SBU is too far from port to walk and a taxi would not be the most reliable or financially viable option either. She will need to drive. SB is about 20-25 min from ferry, plus the 1 hour and 15 minute ferry over the sound =1.5-1.75 hour commute.

^^That sucks. It does present a good opportunity to be husband-of-the-year though, because you can live on the PJ side and make the gruesome commute yourself.Port Jeff is also much nicer than Bridgeport. Without a doubt, you have a difficult decision.

This is not a viable commute for your wife. It's just too far and too expensive. Adding to the time it takes to get from Port Jefferson to Stonybrook & the time on the ferry, you then have to factor in the time it takes to get to the ferry from your home. Your wife would be looking at least two hours one way.

Most of Bridgeport is not someplace you would want to live. The better area for grad students would be the Black Rock section which is the opposite side of town from the ferry slip. Not that great a distance but still you have to get there.

Perhaps you can arrange your lives so that both of you take progams on one side of the Sound or the other. Good luck
