Just wanted to see if any one has had any experience or recommendations for getting an energy efficient modular home in CT.

you buy the land and a modular home is:

What Are Modular Homes?

  • Modular homes are built in sections at a factory.
  • Modular homes are built to conform to all state, local or regional building codes at their destinations.
  • Sections are transported to the building site on truck beds, then joined together by local contractors.
  • Local building inspectors check to make sure a modular home's structure meets requirements and that all finish work is done properly.
  • Modular homes are sometimes less expensive per square foot than site built houses.
  • A well-built modular home should have the same longevity as its site-built counterpart, increasing in value over time.

I've heard some town building inspectors give a hard time to these types of buildings, cause they can't order as many construction inspections. Not sure if the rules are different for homes vs business buildings. I know it made news here when a preschool was built with modular components.

There was a place down near Danbury (I think...) where they build them. Most of the factories will have samples on site (like buying a shed), we almost went that route. Do a google search you can find lots of plan sites, then just find a manufacturer. This is more common down south where new construction is still booming, in New England it's mostly raised ranches that are modular. We found a stick built so we changed our mind but it's cost effective, especially if you already have land.

Westchester Modular supplies a lot of the modulars in western CT. They are based in NY state and have model homes you can walk through. I think you can do a walkthrough of their factory too but that may have changed.
