I think Target is slightly above Walmart. I’m not a customer of either, but the two or three times I have been to the now closed Walmart in Norwalk I didn’t like the experience. It also gave a slight disorganization feeling with seeing many things out-of-place.

Never-the-less, it was shocking to see a Walmart closed. That’s when you know things are really bad. lol

It’s only bad if it closed and nothing replaced it. I believe in this case it wasn’t Walmart wanting to close the store but that they lost their lease to a higher quality store that is likely willing to pay more to lease the store. It shows the high desirability of the location.

Yep - WalMart closes stores all the time. You can see here all the excess property they are trying to offload.

It's possible they still own the property and is leasing it to Target.

I am going to really give away my age. I believe that site used to be where Bradlees was.

When I was younger Caldor was kind of like Walmart and Bradlees was kind of like Target.

My friends and I actually recall the opposite - Bradlees was like Walmart, and Caldor was a little more fancy like Target.

Maybe it's because the Caldor in Stamford was a real dump.

That may have been the case later but when Caldor was privately or majority owned by founders Carl and Dorthy Bennett, it was much better run and more upscale. It was built on being known for selling high quality merchandise at discount prices. In fact it was just below upscale department stores like Macy’s.

In 1981, the Bennetts sold the chain to Associated Dry Goods but Carl Bennett remained at the helm until 1985 when he retired. After that the quality of merchandise dropped and the stores weren’t as well maintained. I remember bins of cheap plastic crap started popping up all over their stores. Carl Bennett would never have allowed that. He knew it cheapened the shopping experience and turned off customers. Thats likely the store you remember.
