Hello all,

I'm going to be visiting some friends in Glastonbury soon and I wanted to know the best way to drive there. I can either go through 88 and 90 through Albany or I can go through 17 and 84. They are both about the same distance. Which way do you think would be the fastest?

I'd go 17 to 84 in Middletown, NY to Connecticut route 72 which runs into route 9 and take that south. Take that into Middletown, CT for route 66 and once across the bridge take CT 17 towards Glastonbury

I would give a nod to I-88/I-90, only because I-84 through Danbury (and Waterbury) is always unpredictable. No such bottlenecks on the other route...in fact I-88 can be downright desolate. Plus the scenery on the Mass Pike through the Berkshires can't be beat.

I've got in-laws around Ithaca and live next to Glastonbury. I recommend the I-88 to I-90 to I-91 route. I-88 is desolate as noted above (even on busy "travel holidays") and Rt. 17 in NY has been in various states of construction for years and years. Plus, I-84 in CT sucks.

That sounds good. What's an estimated travel time, 4.5 hours? Or closer to 4?

I would NEVER send anyone through Middletown to get to Glastonbury. It is way out of the way unless the OP is going to the extreme southern end of town.

I have a friend with family in Ithica and they go the I-88/I-90/I-91 route. In Hartford, you should get on I-84 Eastbound to Route 2 Eastbound. That will take you right into Glastonbury. Definitely the best way to go. Jay

It usually takes us closer to 5 hours, but that includes a stop for a bathroom break and traveling about 70 mph. The only predictable traffic hang ups on that route are in Springfield, MA and Hartford, CT if you hit them right at rush hour.

The rule of thumb for out of state drivers...always minimize the amount of driving you're forced to do in CT.

Drivers here suck, and the roads are even worse.

I-84 from the NY line is a death-trap with significant rush-hour delays in the vicinity of Danbury, Waterbury and Hartford.

So, yeah..stick with the 88-90 route. It only forces you to deal with approximately 20 miles of our terrible roads.

This makes no sense at all. All kinds of traffic on 84.

Totally out of your way to go to glastonbury by heading to middletown and and on top of it you'll run into traffic potentially at that light on route 9 and you're on back roads with lights/stop signs/low speed limits ect.
90 To 91 is your best bet by far.

79 >> 206 >> 88 >> 90 >> 91.

17 between Bingo and Middletown is a long ugly drive, and the entirety of 84 between the state line and Hartford is a wildcard.
