Bob the builder hit the nail on the head. I do not have kids and so I would not move to CT for those reasons.
Anyway. Thanks for all the great info.
One final note:
Is it so hard for the people of CT to say thanks? Why is that? When I was there for the 3 days I found it almost to the point that the people there (In Canton, Avon and Glastonbury) to be rude. And don't even get me started on the drivers....
That will be it. No more posts for me about CT you can have it....
Rocklin - Visiting Hartford does NOT make you an expert on CT.
Not to mention you picked the major city to visit which is not a reflection on CT. Most of us on this board would tell you we would never consider living in Hartford.
Canton is a beautiful and high end town with wonderful schools and alot to offer.
I am NOT a realtor!!!
Hartford is the capital of CT and the largest corporate center in the state. (Stamford standing side to side). It is also the only large city we have that is a stand alone metro without being tied to another larger city.
Why would you say that it is not a reflection of the state? Please tell me this isn't SW CT elitism showing it's face?

Babe. When you have kids, the whole world outlook changes. Unless you are Californian and only had kids to justify the SUV
Rocklin - I frequent Avon and Canton and I've rarely ever met rude people. Perhaps the people who "dont say thanks" to you may be doing that in reflection of your own attitude towards them and our state.
I took 3 days and decided to visit before I gave the decision to my boss. I have decided to stay in Sunny Calif. The decision was based on the houses that I saw in the area. To get a comparable house in this area, I would have to spend well over $750K and pay well over $14000.00 per year in property taxes on just the house.
Hi Rocklin,
Here's the breakdown of properties currently on the market in Canton:
1 - Under $200,000
10 - Between $200,000 - $299,999
21 - Between $300,000 - $399,999
7 - Between $400,000 - $499,999 => median is $429,900
5 - Between $500,000 - $599,999
8 - Between $600,000 - $699,999
6 - Between $700,000 - $799,999
5 - Between $800,000 - $899,999
1 - Between $900,000 - $999,999
5 - Over $1 million
Without knowing what you had in California, I can't comment on your claim about having to spend $750,000 to replace it though it's not beyond belief. The properties priced near $750,000 are 4100-square-foot Colonials.
The most you would have to pay in taxes is $14,000 with many of the properties priced at $750,000 being closer to $11,000. I don't know why taxes are so high in Connecticut, but they are.
My family and I are looking to move to Conn from San Francisco area. Ia m originally from Albany, NY and have been out here for 10 yrs now and I can't wait to move. California may be for some people but not for me. People are polite but it is very difficult to make real friends. I find that people have their own little circle of friends and do not make much of an effort to meet new people. People who are from California tend to be friends with people from California. I am nervous about moving back east because I have heard that people are very rude. I have had friends from the Northeast visit me in California and comment on how friendly people are. People are friendly on the surface but try to become close friends with them. We plan on visiting sometime late Spring and I am interested to see what my impression will be. East and West Coast are two different worlds.
As much as I love California cmon- for many reasons, I would not live there now. Outrageous housing costs are at the top of the list-
As for as 'friendliness vs rude' well there is a California rudeness or shall I say 'attitude' based on judging others by their income, social status, wealth, and amount of toys they have gathered- I find that to be the most distressing problem of all about California culture.
I'm curious why everyone is saying the schools in Canton are so so so amazingly good and that California schools are all horrible. You claimed the public schools are better than even the most amazing private schools of California. Looking at greatschools.net, I found Canton High School to be rated only a 6/10. How is that excellent? I'm not trying to be rude, I just don't get how a 6 could be excellent. I live in California and there are three high schools in my city. Two are rated a 9/10 and one is a 8/10. That sounds a lot better than a 6/10 if you ask me. Don't try to justify that the elementary schools are good, high school is where school starts counting for college, so am I missing something, does Canton go to another high school that is better than a 6/ 10.
but when I read that California schools as a whole are rated 49th out of 50 states, and Connecticut schools rated in the top 10 for performance and test scores, and spending at the local level- it might seem futile to argue this point.
Connecticut ranked 3rd in the nation for elementary schools; California 46th.
Middle schools CT 10th ; CA again 46th- high school may be important- But the road there has to have some solid underpinnings from grades K-8. Source: USA Public School Rankings
