The DMV is updating their computers, and branches will be closed for 4 days. In their truly infinite wisdom, they are closing 2 adjacent branches at a time.
Went yesterday to the Norwalk DMV at 2pm, line was out the door. I said screw it.
Went this morning at 8am and this is what I see...
Sure, lets build a 10 sq ft building in an area of a gazillion people. WHERE ARE PEOPLE'S BRAIN CELLS OUT THERE!?? WTF
And this is nothing.. it was jammed packed inside with people sitting and waiting and even with yet another line to wait to get to a window to get a number.. I wish you can register a vehicle online without this BS
I don't remember it being this bad 4 years ago. I was in and out the few times I did go.
Its the computer system upgrade they did a few weeks ago which has caused all the delays. Its been extensively documented in the media. They've actually given extensions until October to people needing to renew their registrations or licenses.
I didn't know they had the wait times online. Well that's cool...and yet sad. This is AFTER you actually get a number so it doesn't include the wait on line outside and inside. Gotta be close to 4hrs for registration if the line is outside like that still
I was at Old Saybrook on Wednesday for vehicle registration. Arrived at 9 AM. Was finally taken at 1:40. Took her 60 minutes to complete my transaction because they have to call Wethersfield to issue plates on the new system (which is a good indication they implemented the system before it was finished.)
Was in Old Saybrook for 3 hours. Temp plate looked like it was printed on an 8.5x11. Not sure where I'm supposed to put it but it's not license plate sized like the old ones.
How and why would you guys wait hours? Guess it was needed right away. I need to register a car I bought but I will drive the old one before I sell it. So no rush but want to get this done. No way in heck I will wait 3+hrs there.
Hopefully it was the holiday weekend that brought the chaos on top of the new system change.
Nope Cam, it's been like this since they improved their system.
What were the upgrades supposed to accomplish?
Not that it surprises me, given the failure of the access health website. Seriously, I need a job like that. Where I can screw up so miserably multiple times and still get paid.

I believe upgrades were supposed to offer more online services but it seems to have been nothing but a big cluster-you-know-what. My husband spent a total of 8 hours at the Danbury DMV the week of 8/18 (split between 2 days) attempting to register a car. I tried to go the following week to finish the process but was turned away when I arrived at noon. On Saturday 8/29 we received in the mail our "temporary" plate (a piece of flimsy 8.5 x 11 paper), which expired on Monday 8/31 -- so all that effort and we were issued a temporary registration valid for 2 whole days!! I haven't gone back and probably won't until this settles down. Next week will probably be a nightmare too, because they closed early yesterday, they have today off, and then Monday off as well for the holiday. Will probably take a good week or so for them to recover from the closures. Question: I heard the state gave an automatic extension on expiring licenses and registrations until October 1st in light of this mess. Does anyone know if my temporary registration, which expired on Monday, would be included in this automatic extension?
