I've had a number of cars registered in New Hampshire over the years. No sales tax but you pay a property tax at town hall every year in addition to a registration fee. For a newer car, most of your yearly cost is the property tax. It used to be a PITA to register a new car. You'd have to pay property tax at town hall and then show the receipt at motor vehicles to get a plate. You couldn't legally drive the car until you did both steps.

In Vermont, you just pay sales tax and the registration fee is pretty cheap. I think my 2 year vanity plate renewal is $200-ish.

Massachusetts is 2.5% on a new car in addition to sales tax. The car is valued at 90% of sticker price the first year, 60% the 2nd year, 40% the 3rd year, 25% the 4th year, and then 10% forever afterwards. So a $20K sticker price car will have a $50 excise tax bill from the 5th year onwards. My boat is a 1969 hull. I pay $25 in excise tax on it every year.

I dealt with my mom's car in Rhode Island. I still don't quite understand their automobile property tax. I saw a bill from the town 9 months after I'd sold the car and turned in the plates. I called and they said they bill in arrears so a bill I saw in mid-2016 was for 2015. Dunno why they do it that way.

Sort of on-topic:

So how does Connecticut value the car for property tax assessments? I see "70% of average retail value". Do you have to give the town your mileage every year and they punch it into Kelly Blue Book as "average" condition? Do they get mileage from the emissions test every-other year?
Sorry when I saw $37 I though you meant total dollars not mils.

I believe in CT the assessment is based on clean retail blue book and average mileage. They may now be using the states mileage data but they used to just use 12,000 miles a year back in the day. The way the law is written it's also almost impossible to challenge.

In NH I always heard they didn't call it motor vehicle property tax instead the registration is calculated the same way it would be if it was property tax. Like shown on this site.

My friend used to have a rental house and registered his cars there as it was less then the property tax in his high mil rate town here in CT.
Boats are exempt from property tax in CT and RI. But CT has upped it's fees quite a bit in the last 10 years. My old sail boat is $52 bucks used to be much cheaper years ago.

I was scanning the DOT website the other day and found a line mentioning planned changes to the I-91 rt 5 interchange in Hartford (common backup point to cut across to 84) All the info said was scheduled to start in 2018 with federal funding. Anyone know what they are planning?

Yes. They are planning to build a new two lane exit to replace the single lane one to the Charter Oak Bridge. The new exit is going to be on the left though. Construction is scheduled to start late next year. Jay

Ahh good I was hoping for that. Way to much traffic tries to get off that one lane now.

It was like that the day it opened 30 years ago. Not sure what they were thinking but it was definitely poor planning. Unfortunately they do not have plans to fix the problem going the other way (Route 5/15 Southbound to I-91 Southbound). That likely will be more complicated and expensive since it means they would have to widen I-91 Southbound into the Wethersfield Cove area. Jay

SHHHHHHH! Keep it quiet but there is a little work around for that one. If you keep left and follow the brainard rd exit there is an option to get on 91 south from the right side further down.

I know. It is called the "Cheater Ramp". Hope no one finds out about it. It will remain our little secret. Jay

I've known about this for at least 20 years, so the secret is out. I hardly ever see any 18 wheelers use it though, so that's a positive.
