I thought of this thread last night when watching the news. There has been a rash of burglaries in Hamden south of Route 15. The break-ins are occurring at night while people sleep and cars have been stolen out of driveways. They had a map on Channel 3 and they appear to be all over southern Hamden. Here is a link to it. Again - completely different area. The closest burglary among that cluster is two miles away from Spring Glen. It's happening in the Pine Rock/Wintergreen area, which is known to be problematic because it's adjacent to the projects on the other side of the New Haven line, and in close proximity to the infamous Newhallville.

There are parts of Hamden you want to avoid. That's one of them. If you open google maps to look at the southern area of Hamden, you'll see a triangle. Woodin Street on the bottom, Circular Ave on the right side, and Rte 15 on the left side. That's the "danger zone." Now scan to the right of that triangle, up Rte 10 (Dixwell). Notice Mather Street to the right. Now keep going til you hit Elgin Street, across from the Hamden High School. Look a little further up Dixwell to Skiff Street. Now see further to the right, Whitney Avenue. Now notice Ridge Road, to the right of Whitney Avenue. That whole area from Mather to Skiff, Dixwell to Ridge, is Spring Glen. Completely, totally, utterly different neighborhood, separated by MAJOR crossroads and several shopping centers.

For traffic, avoid the Whitney/Dixwell junction, and avoid Dixwell in general, and avoid Skiff from Ridge Road all the way to its end on Dixwell. I'd also steer clear of Mix Avenue, which is the street parallel to Dixwell above (literally - look up, and you'll see it) the Hamden Plaza/Mart.

Spring Glen is near Dixwell, in fact it runs into Dixwell on one side, near the High School. But since Whitney is the *OTHER SIDE* of Spring Glen, and since 1600 is on the last block of Spring Glen before Waite and the Reservoir, it is completely spared from the traffic issues on Dixwell, and completely spared from the crime problems in Pine Rock and Newhallville.

Also Jay, it's not "all over" Southern Hamden. Southern Hamden is a pretty big area, and the burglaries (five total) have happened in two neighborhoods; four in one neighborhood, and one in another. In fact the lady in the video stated that she'd had her cars stolen before, which was why she put the lights up over her driveway.

Thumbs up Safe

My brother and his family lived just off Whitney in that area for 40+ Years. They only moved because of a desire for a house with no stairs. Their son and wife live a few blocks south, right on Whitney for close to 10 years. My nephew did tell me the traffic noise, day and night, was bad, as he is a light sleeper. However it is a great neighborhood. It has a real neighborhood feel, is convenient to shopping and, as far as I know, safe. People I know who sold houses in Spring Glen had no trouble selling, as the neighborhood is very desirable. You could do a lot worse!

I realize I was talking about a different area of Hamden than the actual home location of OP, same as the burglary issues which are not in the exact locale. However, this to me is the same as someone saying I live in Bridgeport but near the FF line so it's the good part. To me it's still Bridgeport, and that as a whole is not a great thing.

So when referencing the town it is important to know about more than the block or two you are going to be living in, and for where OP is looking to live they are going to experience Whitney Ave and Dixwell in the areas mentioned, they also need to at least be aware of crime and other things in the area as they do impact the community and not just the affected streets/neighborhoods.

That being said, there are many nice areas of Hamden but as a whole the town to me is very unappealing between the tax rate and what you get in return, the traffic/congestion, and the ongoing crime which looks like it has increased this year if you've been watching/reading the news. Then you look at the neighboring towns of North Haven, Cheshire, Wallingford and the variances become even greater.

In my experience (and I'm from Hamden, grew up there, returned there after college, have friends who live there now, and go there now, and live in the very next town currently), there's a big difference between Hamden and Bridgeport, and the differences are enough that comparing the two is almost insulting.

Bridgeport is primarily a less-than-stellar town, with some very nice areas.

Hamden is primarily a very nice town, with some less-than-stellar areas.

They are not polar opposites, but they are on opposite sides of the spectrum.
