Hello Everyone

I'm a single woman in my mid thirties looking to relocate to Connecticut for Mid summer of 2016. I do know CT is not as diverse as NY but I hope to at least live in a city with some or little diversity. I've been doing research and I think Fairfield County is one of my first interest of place to live, due to the fact it's not far from NY and also sounds like some diversity there. My most concern is safety especially being a single woman. I really don't mind Living around quietness since that's in my nature and I'm very use to it. I currently live in a very quiet suburb neighborhood in NYC. It's getting too expensive to live here.

I want to opt New Heaven and Bridgeport base on numerous reviews on violence and safety problem. I'm looking into cities that are affordable in rent range $675 max $775 (1 BR). I'm a really a Certified nursing Assistant but I currently work as a Home Health Aide (caring for the elderly/disabled ones). I will still keep my job in NY since I can easily commute by train, until I transfer my credentials to CT and find a job there. I do drive and have a car so getting around in CT shouldn't be a problem. I would really appreciate any suggestion or recommendation . Thanks in advance.

Most important:
Affordable rent
Safety
Little or some diversity
Near train

This depends on where your work is currently located and how quickly you can transfer your credentials. If you have to work in NY for an extended period of time, your transportation/living situation will be tough. Ideally, NYC commuters want to live in Stamford so they can catch express trains to Manhattan or local trains for Westchester and the Bronx. But I don't think you can find a 1-bedroom in Stamford for under 1k, even in the not-so-nice areas. And even if you were to live in Stamford, Brooklyn will not be commutable and you would have to drive to Queens and Long Island as the train would not be commutable.

Your next, less expensive option farther away from NY is Norwalk, but you only have express trains to Manhattan and driving commutes to any part of NY increase significantly.

If you can transfer your credentials quickly, you won't be strapped to NY and could live in Hartford or New Haven counties, which offer plenty in your field with a lower cost of living.

I don't see you getting a 1 bedroom in a safe neighborhood anywhere in Fairfield County at $775. This is one of the most expensive places to live in the country.

Do you mean you want to opt out (not live) in New Haven and Bridgeport? Do you have a car?

Your price range is tough but you might be able to find something in Stratford. You also might be able to find something in West Haven too but it would be a very far commute to NYC. If you are only going to commute for a few months from West Haven it might not be too bad.

Welcome to CT and Good Luck.

$775 won't get you much of anything. Not even in Bridgeport or Port Chester, NY. You could live above this garage for $750/month in Fairfield:

Home for Rent - 224 Oldfield Rd, Fairfield, CT 06824 - realtor.com®

Ironically, she could live like a queen in Atlanta for $775/month, the original board she posted this to. But then she'd have to live in Atlanta, GA

The only way you could swing it for $775 a month in Fairfield County would be to find somebody renting a bedroom in a home or subletting an extra bedroom in their apartment.

Good luck, and welcome to CT if you do move.

$750 for 250 square feet above a filthy garage is crazy...
