Interesting, I go right by this place everyday as part of the commute. Never noticed any palm trees or really looked. Will try to remember to look tonight.
Yep, saw them last night and this morning, not sure how I never noticed until this thread. Thought I was on a strip mall road in California.
That big one is certainly not fitting in a container or greenhouse.
Tropical stuff is pointless in Connecticut IMO. I've had Lemon, Banana, Avocado, Key Lime all die on me and that's with constantly bringing them in for the winter and caring for them.
They don't belong in our climate. Just like Magnolia and some other tree types.
My mom in southern NY doesn't mind though..
Even Canna plants with Tropical like foliage needs to be brought indoors. Pain for Beauty?
My folks also in "southern NY" actually successfully had a magnolia growing in their front lawn for about a decade or so (they didn't put it there, when they bought the house in 1974 the previous owners had), but it too eventually succumbed.
I'm out at the bottom of the Ct River valley-near the Sound. I have a magnolia on my front lawn. It's about 25' tall and almost as broad. Needs to get pruned every couple of years to keep it under control. It's deciduous- I don't know what variety it is, but it's been here since this house was built ( 1965 ish ) . It starts off with big pinkish flower buds which turn whitish when fully open.
There are others in the area so they are really not unusual.
I just want to say that the two large palm trees are no longer there. My guess is that someone bought them. Many of the smaller one's are still there, but the effect is not the same. The large one's instantly took me out of CT, at least for a handful of seconds. lol
On another note (I will take photos some time next week), I saw two small palms planted by the sidewalk in one of the Harbor Point streets in Stamford. I believe these palms were planted there by the owners of the complex, but could be wrong.
