Are you talking about salt water beach on the Sound or ocean or is a freshwater lake acceptable?

Not much of a help can't really swim in Lakes or the Sound due to ear infections. Usually head up to the Cape, Block Island, or near Westerly to swim.

With that said CT does have beautiful beaches. Some are a bit crowded in the Summer. Lake Waramaug is a beautiful place to camp, walk, and kayak. Bluff Point State Park is a great place to picnic, take a walk, watch some planes, and safe in the water. Harkness Memorial State Park is similar. Lake Quassapaug is another great place to just relax. Think most of the beaches there are private outside ofvthe Amusement Park. Candlewood Lake is great for boating. Mashamoquet Brook State Park is a great place if you seek peace and quiet.

Side note, Westport (Compo beach) was just ranked #1 in the state.

yeah, for saltwater closest to Hartford, by far the best, not even close. If you're going to go to the New London area beaches, it's worth it to just drive a little further over to RI.

I completely agree here. I've been to some pretty nice beaches in the US, the caribbean, and even the beach in the movie The Beach. Compo blows them all away, nevermind the state.

Drive right out of Ct and go to the beach in RI or NJ. There isn't a beach in Ct worth spending any time at.

Hammonasset is one of the most popular in CT it's a nice beach. When I'm there I'm always camping so it's a little less crowded on that end of the beach. it does get crowded mid summer we like to go end of summer start of fall, my kids really like it there. Based on distance I would say try it out. If your looking for bigger waves Misquamicut is hard to beat. Again very busy in middle of summer weekends. We usually go to New London sometimes too nice little day trip.
If your not looking to swim but prefer a picnic try harkness.

For a cool little beachtown without many crowds and a great little beach try hole in the wall in niantic. Parking is a bit pricey but otherwise a cool place.

Now my favorite beach in the area in Watch hill RI and napatree but parking is a real pain as the local billionaires prefer you not be there.

The beach didn't rank, the town did. Compo Beach is not great, and it's extremely expensive for out of town era to park at.

My favorites are Sasco Beach, Walnut Beach (great boardwalk), Woodmont Beach, Madison Surf Club or the Madison Beach Hotel, Hammonasset.

There's also a lot of really nice coastal areas that aren't necessarily beaches.
