One thing to remember before making it 100% about NYC, is that there are plenty of people on the western edges of the state who work in White Plains and other parts of Westchester as well, and just prefer the lower property taxes (we have had many on this forum).
True, but most commute to the city...

Yes. Probably the same reason why 27% in my town work in NY but in Danbury it’s only 13%. More jobs in Danbury that you can live and work there

Correct, tons work in WCC as well.

Quick eyeballing math shows Greenwich-Stamford-Danbury-Norwalk-Fairfield (70Kish or so combined) work out of state, the most by far. Add another 30K give or take for the rest of FFC and it's only 1% of the total FFC pop, seems low. Looks like about 33 people in Sherman work out of state (33%).
The %s go down significantly as you go further east to the Bridgeport area towns as commuting costs can become a burden to the lower income/budget households out there.

Also a higher percentage of white collar professionals in NF, who are more likely to commute in general.

If you compare the amount of jobs in NYC vs the amount of jobs in WCC, it’s a safe bet to say that the majority of those that commute out of state in Lower FFC are headed into the city.

Wouldn't you assume most commute out of state jobs are white collar pros. Mcjobbers could just stay in state - CTs strength.

I think more commute to White Plains, etc than you think, there are plenty of CT cars on Westchester roads every day. I agree substantially more commute to Manhattan though they usually go by train. My guess of % CT to NY commuters that go to NYC vs Westchester is maybe 70/30 or 75/25 or so.

The weirder thing I see driving from Westchester into FFC in the morning is a small but significant number of NJ cars on the road....a toll bridge and TWO states (though doable....maybe spouse works in opposite direction in NJ). I wonder how many commute from CT to NJ, I'd guess not a lot but not zero
