I'll be going to Yale, therefore I will be in New Haven. My wife has a job in hartford. Where would you folks suggest living? I was thinking somewhere on the I-91 corridor would be best for us. But I haven't heard great things about meriden & middletown. Alternatively, if I have to, I'll live close to hartford as long as I can easily access I-91S. Also, how long would you estimate the commute to new haven be? We are interested in renting a 2br apartment in a nice, safe area. Thanks for your help in advance!!!

Try Rocky Hill or Cromwell. Tons of apartments in Cromwell Hills and at Century Hills in Rocky Hill. Both are very close to I 91. Crime rates are low in both towns.

Hamden is a very nice middle class town just north of New Haven. It's reasonably priced with many rents, has quick access to train stations, parks and beaches are about 15 minutes away. Hartford is about 35 minutes from Hamden but if your wife has a normal 8-4 or 9-5, she will probably hit some traffic on I-91 getting into Hartford. This can add another 15 minutes onto the trip. From Hamden into New Haven, you can take back roads so traffic is minimal.

I may be a little biased regarding Meriden because it's one of my least favorite CT towns. I am not a fan of the way it seems folks don't care about the appearance of their homes when compared to most CT neighborhoods. There is a large mall with plenty of shopping which is a plus, and it's more centrally located between Hartford and New Haven which is more convenient. Prices are also much lower than the surrounding area. I just think Hamden is a better place to live.

Good luck!

Try the Westlake section of Middletown. It's sort of separate from the rest of Middletown.

Yes, that would be a good area for you. Easy access to 91 for both your commutes. It's safe, and has a nice country feel-there is a nice walking path that is popular.

I think the Westlake section of Middletown is an excellent suggestion and I can tell you that during rush hour (presuming no traffic accidents or weather related problems) you can get to New Haven in about 45 minutes traveling at the speed limit. Your wife should be able to reach Hartford in about 30 minutes.

This part of Middletown borders Cromwell and is close to the Berlin Turnpike which will give you a pretty wide range of stores and restaurants. The Meriden mall is pretty close as well.

Another option is to check out the housing options used mostly by the Wesleyan students. I wouldn't rule out Middletown as an option until you check it out for yourself.

Another poster had mentioned Rocky Hill. Century Hills apartments is a very large apartment complex located very close to I91. I know that this was once a very nice complex with quite a few amenities. It has been awhile since I have been there so I'm not sure how it stands today. The complex is tucked away in a quiet part of Rocky Hill off of Route 3. Cromwell borders this part of Rocky Hill and you will find plenty of stores, restaurants, doctors, etc. within these two towns. I believe that the commute to both New Haven and Hartford would be about the same as from Westlake.

Both of these areas offer easy access to Routes 9 and 91 which allows quick access to many parts of CT.

Best wishes!

I too would recommend the Westfield section of Middletown. It is very convenient and very safe. You have great access to New Haven and Hartford and there are a lot of rentals and condos in the West Lake section. Jay
