OP here. I'm just chiming in to say thanks to everyone who posted. I've read through every post, and there's a lot of information to digest. Hopefully I didn't get people too riled up re: commute times.

I guess what I am trying to say is the OP would have to look in the more south eastern part of Fairfield to afford a house.
That area is generally called Tunxis Hill. No one calls it lower Black Rock Turnpike. That would be considered the section near Fairfield Metro Center and BJ's. Tunxis Hill is one of the larger neighborhoods in Fairfield and anyone who knows Fairfield knows where it is. McKinley School and Fairfield Warde High School are in it as are Stop & Shop and Kohl's and a number of other stores and restaurants. Jay

Also, I noticed a lot of people keep mentioning Fairfield Metro for calculating commute distances from Trumbull. Isn't the Bridgeport station a shorter drive or is there a reason people go to Fairfield Metro?

There is abundant parking at Fairfield Metro Center with 1,300 spaces directly adjacent to the station. Bridgeport station is located downtown and parking is mostly in more expensive private garages. Jay

Thanks Jay.

Looking at CTrides website (https://ctrides.com/parking), parking at Bridgeport is $45/month with a Metro North monthly pass which isn't bad at all. Fairfield Metro has an 18+ month wait list. A lot of old posts on this forum (5+ years) mention ample parking in the Harbor Yard garage. Is this no longer the case?

Bridgeport is a bit of a pain. Driving in the city, then parking in a garage and hoofing it. Plus the 8/25/95 exchange area can be a mess at rush hour. I used Ffld Metro from Milford for months. Easy off highway. Easy to park. $6 a day or $210/6 months for permit. 16-18 min drive 90% of the time. I just find it’s a much easier station.

I did look into permits and they said 12+ months. I only stuck to Milford because I’m minutes to the station, shorter walk, and better seat on train. It’s $300 a year which is close enough. Might as well apply now at multiple stations. There’s no disadvantage, you don’t HAVE to buy a permit once you’re next in line. It doesn’t cost anything to apply.

If I were you I’d apply at Fairfield Metro, Milford, Stratford, and Southeast to keep options open.

Also I’d highly recommend exploring all these towns. There is a fair diversity in feel. Check out the train stations. Maybe do a test commute from a few places at actual rush hour. It’s a huge decision and forums can only provide so much advice.

WOW, an 18 month wait for a permit at Fairfield Metro now. I remember when it first opened there was tons of permits available. Glad to hear it has become more popular. Unfortunately that means a longer wait for you. Jay

I have no idea how feasible taking a bus to the train station is in real life, but evidently people do it. Here's bus info to the Bridgeport station. I guess there's bus service to the Fairfield station too?
