This was less about coronavirus and more about the circumstances. UConn is now independent (no conference) and most (maybe all) football schedules for this season are within conference. Exception being Notre Dame which has a huge following, draws TV ratings and is viable.

UConn probably couldn’t get any games scheduled, and without fans in seats anyways, they avoided embarrassment of not being able to scrap together a schedule (where the TV viewing would have been non-existent or minimal at best).

There are probably a few thousand people upset about this.

If UConn football was viable in any way, they would not have canceled the season. Instead it’s likely their only option and they get the PR of “doing what’s best in consideration of safety”

Why would it be an embarrassment? wouldn't people understand.

A few thousand people upset might be grossly optimistic. Maybe a couple hundred, tops.

No one cares about college football in the northeast.

That's mostly true. But in this case, it's 10,000 times harder to care.

UConn *could* have filled their schedule pretty easily in any other year, especially if they were willing to go on the road. They're the type of team power conference schools like to go against for easy non-conference wins to get bowl eligible. A D1 patsy that will show up, get some cash and go down without a fight. This year though, it doesn't really matter. UConn is smart enough to accept the reality that scrambling to get games is a waste of time and effort. There's not going to be a college football season for the vast majority of teams and even if a few die hards in the south try it's going to get cancelled by week three when the entire rosters test positive. Why bother trying? The season is officially over for UConn now with the rest of the NCAA soon to follow.

Big 10 and Pac 12 cancelled their seasons.

I know there's many things that demonstrate UConn football's futility, but this isn't one of them.

Probably speaks more to the futility of the Big 10 and PAC 12.
