A few weeks ago I looked on the sex offender registry and found that someone on that list spent 10 years in prison and is living in my apartment building and has been for a few years. There are young kids in my building. I never looked on that list before. I am in Milford by the train station and there is a public middle school as well as a private girls school within a few hundred feet. WTF? Does CT (Milford) not have any laws against convicted sex offenders living by schools? And holy crap! The list had 104 living/working within 5 miles of me and the list was a bit wonky because I put in another milford address and saw a lot more.

From what I read, CT does not have residency restrictions on where sex offenders may live. The law requires that they register with the state and provide their home and work addresses.

Many of the laws that have been enacted that restrict where a sex offender may live or work have been struck down as they have been found to be overly restrictive. Most prohibited the offenders from living or working within 2,000' of a park or school which is considered an onerous restriction and prevented them from being able to live in many cities or towns.

There is even one in Darien and he even looks like Santa Claus (year-round) he actually sometimes used to stand on the corner on Route 1 by where he lived in a dilapidated small apartment building right by St. Luke's church and wave at the school buses when they went by but all the kids knew who he was.

It’s alarming for sure, but keep in mind that due to Milford’s massive retail base, a lot will be working in the city.

I mentioned this to the building cleaning a few weeks ago. I ran into him yesterday and he looked up his address (also in milford by naugatuck ave) and told me that there was an offender living 2 houses down from him and another across the street in a new condo unit that has a lot of kids. I went thru the whole list looking at the picks and names and addresses looking to see if I might know or recognize anyone else. F'ing Connecticut...thankfully I am getting out of here in a few weeks. Massive taxes, 100+ toll booths voted in by residents by picking a govenor trhat said he will put them in, and now finding out that I'm living in the midst of child rapists. F'ing CT.

This is perhaps a good thing because secluding sex offenders from basic normal living increases their misery and odds of re-offending

But yes I would have your community volunteer to watch these people closely as a group uniting together looking after the little ones. Work with each other and alert one another.

Befriend them if they are kind but don’t trust them without your supervision. I see them as humans but with an illness they can’t help, but still capable of being befriended and kept arms length away from kids.

It’s a mental illness, much like you can’t give alcohol to an alcoholic or give a jar of cookies to a person with a binge disorder. Befriend them but strict boundaries around kids. Kids also need to be taught not to be with them without parental supervision, nor if anyone in their area is bald or wearing a mask as this could be the offender disguising appearance.

If an offender re-offends within the area he/she lives, then that person should no longer be allowed to live within those areas, but at least give them a chance to live where they need to work where they are employed, unless their first offense was severe.

Where are you moving to ? I hope it isn't California or Florida . They are # 1 and # 2.
CT is 35th out of all the states for the number of sex offenders living here. CT has around 5000 out of a little more than 3 million residents. California has 106,000 out of 40 million residents. Florida almost 70,000 out of 20 million residents.

I agree with you and was dumbfounded as well by that comment which obviously was made by someone who doesn't give a damned about the 99% of CT residents NOT on that list who pay taxes. Adults are responsible for their own behavior in our society. PERIOD. It is not my job to make a convicted sex offenders life more tolerable so he/she doesn't rape a child again.
