We're a young family moving to Farmington. Can someone give us an idea of what there is to do in Farmington? Where do people go to the movies, restaurants, entertainment, supermarket, etc.? Also, can someone suggest a good bank with nice staff? What's the commute time to Hartford? Best route if there's traffic? Best nail salon? Best local hangout? Is the public library good? Are the people friendly? Any other tips for living in Farmington are welcome. Thanks!

I would say not much in farmington itself, however there is a movie theater and plenty of shopping in avon and the west farms mall area will provide even more shopping and plenty of restaurants. Also you will be close to west hartford center and the new (overated in my opinion) blue back shopping area near WH center which includes another theater. Others from the immediate area can probably provide more detail on banks, what the people are like, etc.
Farmington is a great family town with highly reputable schools. There is a nice historic town center, albeit small. There is a great public golf course, and a club called WInding Trails that has both winter and summer activities. Many families join this. There is a great restaurant called Apricots on the Farmington River. Lots of outdoor space.
Commute time to Hartford is under 15 minutes and there are lots of cultural attractions there. You are also a short drive to the Westfarms Mall (most of it is in Farmington) and Blue Back Square in West Hartford (sort of an outdoor mall/lifestyles center with upscale chains.)
There will be a new Stop & Shop Supermarket in Unionville. It should be,open before the end of the year. There is also a Highland Park Market in Farmington that is very nice. There are several banks in the area. Peoples is good. As for entertainment, there are theaters in West Hartford and Plainville. Not far at all. I wouldn't worry about moving here there is just about everyhting you would want nearby. Jay
Farmington is a bit quieter than nearby towns and doesn't have as many shopping and restaurant options aside from the Westfarms area on the Farmington/West Hartford border. Farmington is a very pleasant place to call home though. You should definately take a walk around the Ms. Porter's school area which is really nice and has a lot of historic buildings. Wood and Tap is a pub/restaurant with a great beer selection and decent food. Grocery stores are standard, but there is also Highland Park Market which is a bit more upscale and offers more organic foods than the normal supermarkets do. If you get a chance, take a drive down to Plainville and go to Pagliaccis (I know I spelled that wrong) which is a great local Italian place that puts the Olive Garden and other chains to shame.
The new Lowes theater in Plainville is probably the closest megaplex.
For shopping you can go three directions.
Towards Avon/Canton with all the latest and greatest shopping centers there on RT44.
Towards RT6 in Bristol with the new strip mall that way
Towards West Hartford Center for what was already mentioned.
