This is becoming a huge issues. Catalytic converters are being stolen from cars and trucks. At my work they hit all 7 of our works vans and it cost my company 20k to repair them all. They contain rare earth metals and are worth a few hundred dollars in scrap value. A new converter can cost 1-2k for just the part.

Looks like they hit all the school busses in New Haven yesterday.

I'm in the auto industry. I have seen this happen many times over the years. And, yes, it is for the reasons you mentioned and very expensive to get new ones. Thieves love Chevy vans and Ford vans. I have seen cars get hit in the past too but not nearly as many as the trucks.

If they get caught it would be just slap on the wrist. Seen so many people get probation for thefts like this.
Even if they get jail time, they would be paroled in no time and go back out there and repeat the same thing over again.

This is all too common thanks to the lawmakers of CT.

Not just CT; this is a problem in many places. According to a local news story on this, you can get your dealer or garage to weld yours in place to make it harder to steal.

They cut it off in less than a minute with a battery powered sawzall. Welding doesn’t help one bit, unfortunately.

It was our local TV news quoting a dealer. I don’t trust them on other news stories, so I don’t know why I bit on this one.

The scrapyard I go to now asks for a drivers license for all scrap dropped off. I actually have a customer number. Years ago they just did it for cats. Of course, it's probably not difficult for a criminal to use a fake license.

It looks like this is a national issue due to the price of certain metals. I saw a story today of a thief crushed in LA while trying to steal one. CA has seen an uptick of 400% in CC thefts from 2019 to 2020. I can’t find the numbers for CT, but would be very surprised if it were that high. Auto burglaries are far more prevalent, I think.
