I'm listening to an audiobook version of Gang Leader for a Day, granted it's about Chicago. Nothing good can come from gangs. The trouble with criminality is that frankly it compounds. A drug dealer isn't going to call cops on another so they hire others. They run more like companies but clearly not within the law. As we become more of a digital world this is much harder to do. anyone can grab a smart phone and record audio and video now, gps is everywhere, DNA can prove quite a bit etc. S this is pretty much all drug based now. Without addiction that eliminates returning customers. There's no such thing as diet heroin or crack light. You want to know why the AARP doesn't advertise to hard drug addicts? Because by the time they are that age most are dead. Same with life insurance companies.

The worst part about what happened is no one is saying anything. A guy was the target and fled so he's gone. Who was he? If a gang is willing to kill (even accidently) a 3 year old I'd argue that the other side is probably going to hit back. Nation states have the Geneva Convention gangs don't.

Let’s stick to discussing this incident and not go off topic discussing other states. JayCT, Moderator

I have to say this incident has caused someone I know to reconsider going to Hartford for work. She never had a problem before but now is going to be a lot more cautious. Jay

I don't recall referring to race.

Unless the job is in the North End, it's really nothing to worry about.

North End is bad certainly. But I wouldn't say it's "nothing to worry about" if you're in the Park St, Broad/Russ St, Colt Park, Maple Ave, Hartford Hospital, UCONN school of law, Zion, Flatbush areas. I don't think I'd classify any of those areas as safe unfortunately. Hartford has much larger problems than just the north end.

What is unsafe about the UConn School of Law? It’s in the West End which is very safe. I’m not aware of Maple Avenue being unsafe either. Even the area around Hartford Hospital is relatively safe. It really depends on your definition of safe. I’m not sure I’d say Flatbush and Zion are unsafe either. Jay

There's plenty of petty crime in the West End. Car break ins and home break ins and the like. Also the occasional mugging/assault. Certainly not as dangerous as the North End, but definitely not as safe as West Hartford.
