I actually worked with plenty of ex cons too. Mostly in restaurants in the 1980;s and 1990;s. Didn't have any issue's with them.

I bet their victims have a different story to tell.

and to many of us, in particular, conservatives and moderates, the victims matter most as they obeyed the laws.

If you want to limit recidivism, make sure people with criminal records can work at living wage jobs. Nothing will encourage recidivism like desperation. Addicts turn back to addiction under stress. Without adequate funds, those ordered too can't afford court-ordered counseling.

There has to be a balance. I don't advocate letting dangerous people work in security-sensitive jobs-- But they should be able to deliver pizza for Uber, or, if their crime wasn't financial sell securities.

If someone was arrested in 1996, and has not had a mark on their record since-- should they still have difficulty finding an apartment? or a job? The more you stabilize people with criminal backgrounds, less crime you'll have from them.

I do not care if criminals have issues getting an apartment. Criminals have severe character flaws, and 2/3rd recommit in a short time equally bad crimes.

I do not care if an ex con is driving an uber or working at a McD's, nor do I care what the wage is. I am not a believer in a so called living wage, as I do not believe in tampering with a free market. If it takes 2 jobs to get an apartment, so be it. Tens of millions have worked more than 40 hours for ages, and survived.

Absolutist positions on nuanced issues may make you feel good, but they don't solve anything.

People with felonious histories are walking among you-- and they need to earn a living if you want to prevent crime. Their children deserve to be brought up in a safe, clean environment.

What about people with marijuana convictions?
What about addicts who have been in significant recovery?
What about women who were convicted when defending themselves against a violent spouse?
What about juveniles who were convicted and are now free as adults?

I guess "to hell with them" makes you feel like you have a strong moral compass, but, compassion is built into our system-- and practical considerations make absolutes unworkable.
