Such a horrible tragedy for the family and the community. It's being reported that this was not a random act of violence. Three have been arrested for the shooting.

This young man played Div II football for American International College in Springfield, MA. One can only wonder what was behind this non-random shooting. It's particularly ironic that his grandfather, who helped to raise him, is a long-standing anti-violence community activist in Hartford.

Seriously makes me question why anyone would willingly raise a child, especially a boy, in Hartford. I get calls all the time from young mothers from Hartford looking for a place outside of Hartford, and when I ask them why they're moving, they say, "I gotta get my kids outta here. Too many shootings."

I am assuming you are referring to people raising children in the poorer part of Hartford and not the parents living in the large homes of the West End, sending their kids to private schools like Kingswood Oxford, Watkinson, etc.

There are a variety of reasons. A parent's social support (friends/family) for their children may be in the city. Access to public transit to reliably get to and from work if there is no vehicle in the picture is much better in Hartford than outlying towns. You can find much cheaper rents in Hartford than in surrounding towns. It costs money to move - a lot of money (first and last months rent, moving truck/movers, security deposit, application fees, etc.). I could keep going on. Most people don't decide to raise their children in the crappiest environment they can.

It's called poverty. Poverty = Immobility.

Poverty does not equal immobility. It's been proven plenty of people who has lived in poverty
with nothing has moved on up.

You become immobile if you don't change your ways to be able to move up. Then again, these people are just waiting for everything to be handed to them, so they are used to doing nothing for themselves.

Nah, single mom that cares isn't moving to Glastonbury on a McJob or cleaning houses. Stuck.
Dad was out the back door faster than he was in it.

Like any other region, the key is to not have kids on a McJob. Wait until your skills have advanced a long way past a McJob.

That's right. That's the plan. That's how they drew it up. By design. No one is excluded.
Those that don't or refuse to adhere are immobilized in projects and trailer parks, nationwide, not just Hartford.

Me too. It's good to know they're still arresting criminals in CT.
