Hello,
i am going to be working at Hartford Hospital. What would the commute be like from North haven or Hamden in the morning and afternoon. The driving directions say 35 minutes but what is realistic? i would appreciate any advice from experienced commuters in this area

thank you

Waze and Google Maps (in browser) will let you put in different days and times and give you an estimate based on historical traffic.

Depends what time in morning and afternoon. If you sre going to let's exit 12 in the afternoons from Hartford at 5 on Average you are looking about 50mins. Granted I havent taking the way since covic so it is probably different but this is what it would take me. Some days better

Obviously it depends on where in North Haven or Hamden you start from but I’m thinking during the morning rush hour it would be close to an hour. North Haven is about 31 miles from Hartford Hospital and Hamden is 33 miles. You’d likely hit some traffic in Meriden at the I-91/I-691/Route 15 interchange depending if you are on I-91 or Route 15 but would be moving traffic until you get almost to Hartford itself. Then it would be slow going from about Route 3 to the Whitehead Highway and then on local streets to the Hartford.

What will help you though is the new exit ramp to the Charter Oak Bridge (Exit 29). When it fully opens it should cut down on a lot of congestion on I-91 and your commute could be cut back to 45 minutes. It’s a real game changer for those commuting into Hartford from the south. Jay

I agree. I am wondering why the OP wants to live so far from their job. It definitely is not what I would recommend. Jay

Do you have a better estimate on what time of morning or afternoon? Because 6:30 am driving into Hartford is smooth sailing, not even a tap of the brakes until you need to exit the highway. 8 am is a whole different story.

Typical drive for me from Wallingford was 30 minutes both ways. That was heading in around 7 and home around 3-330. The traffic changes literally within a window so if I left between 645-705 I was fine. After that it would increase to 45 minutes.

Even with heavy traffic I've never been over an hour unless there was an accident or major backups. The good thing is you have options such as jumping between 91/Parkway, 9/91, 84/691 and even some backroads to get you around. I've done it on a few occasions and it's paid off. Whatever you do don't live along 84 or 95, 91/15/9 offer the most options for getting around.

Really depends on time of day. It’s going to take closer to an hour each way if you leave home after about 7am and leave Hartford between about 4 and 6.. Probably 30-35 if you leave outside of that timeframe
