There is kayaking/canoeing in the Clinton/Westbrook area as well. Several small businesses operate along the shoreline

Don't know much to do in New London other than bars. Others may know spots.

Old Saybrook – Fenwick is pretty to drive around. The downtown is nice.

All of the suggested places I listed before are in that area too. It's not a big area.

What about Ocean Beach Park in New London? It’s a nice beach with a Boardwalk, bar, food and miniature golf. Jay

New London has the US Coast Guard Academy and its museum, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, Fort Trumbull (which is a cool old fort), and a few colonial house museums. Neighboring Groton has the Submarine Museum and USS Nautilus (first nuclear submarine) and Fort Griswold (Revolutionary War battlefield).
