My mom did her Martha Stewart thing in Guilford for a while with a hotel condo in Manhattan as a pied a terre. The sailboat was at a marina in Westbrook. They used Amtrak in New Haven to get to NY Penn. That was after they aged out of their winters at a western ski resort and summers in downeast Maine and collapsed down to one house. It's a great location for a retiree with Yale-New Haven right there for really strong health care and lots of Yale-oriented intellectual activites. Not as upscale as lower Fairfield County but a heck of a lot less congestion. They were only there for a half dozen years. They didn't like the sailing and moved to Rhode Island near Wickford in North Kingstown. Personally, I thought Guilford was a much better location. I was working long hours at a metro Boston startup and didn't get to Guilford very often.

Besides the coastline towns mentioned, you might consider going just a bit north of Guilford/Madison to Killingworth or Durham. Very rural feel, with many properties over an acre of land. Both towns are likely to allow chickens. Lots of historic properties and your money will certainly go further. Have fun and keep us posted!
