If he could afford it that is 100% what I would recommend.

Agreed. Young, single, no family…go live in the city. Connecticut will always be there if you want it to be.

I'd do it at that age given the $ and desire to live in a city, for sure.

Make that four votes to live in Manhattan.

Connecticut is great, but it’s a more settle down and have kids great. Sure, there are Stamford and Norwalk, but nothing compares to living in the city.

To make commuting easier, he could live in parts of Harlem that have gentrified or even Washington Heights. That way, he could subway to 125th Street, where he’d board Metro North to Greenwich. The express trains from 125th St to Greenwich are 33-34 minutes. Just be careful of exact area (may want to cross post in the NYC forum).

Best of luck!

I'll make it 5 votes, I was assuming money was a factor.

Nah, whatever votes I have I’m sticking with CT fellas. Anywhere between Greenwich and Norwalk. 169 is my favorite number. Forget Selling Sunset, I’m Selling Greenwich Ave
Ain’t no one leavin’ this house. CT Rocks!!

White Plains - Pretty much a NY version of Stamford, so just apply the comments given here about Stamford

Port Chester - Right on the border of Greenwich so actually a pretty short commute. A little sketchy in spots but gentrifying lately with a lot of restaurants and (albeit not cheap) new apartments geared toward singles taking Metro North train.

New Rochelle - I kind of see them as being Westchester's version of Norwalk so again mostly apply those comments. Easy Metro North access to Greenwich if job is near a train and you live in the gentrifying, singles oriented part of town near the train. That area has similarities to south Norwalk though the latter much more things to do for singles.

Yonkers - Cheapest reasonable option on the Westchester side. Not too far from Greenwich, but will need a car to commute there. Some sketchy areas, but except downtown near the Bronx (though the waterfront has some gentrified apartment complexes and restaurants well hidden from that), no more so than in Stamford, Norwalk, or Danbury (place not mentioned in this thread, probably because not an easy highway commute to Greenwich). Easy, short and quick train access to Manhattan if one wants to go there (Yonkers not really noted for nightlife unlike White Plains, Stamford, or south Norwalk) but not to Greenwich.

Fleetwood section of Mount Vernon - Lots of nice (and some newly constructed) apartments and stores nearby mostly geared toward singles (but no "neighborhood nightlife"). Wouldn't recommend any other part of this city although cheap apts by local standards. Similar to Yonkers in that easy, short, quick train access to Manhattan but not to Greenwich (at least from the Fleetwood neighborhood, other parts of town are on the Metro North line to Greenwich).

Whatever you decide, good luck!
I wouldn’t recommend living in New York without good reason (like to live near people you know). If he lives in NY he’ll have to file income taxes there. Why make his life more complicated unless there’s a good reason? Jay

There’s that and whenever I’m in NYC now I’m like a gazelle on the Serengeti, carefully scanning the environment. You never know what crazy lunatic is lurking about. Situational awareness. Keep your wits about you.

Default Where to live in Greenwich?

Maybe I can be a little helpful as I’ve lived here for 27 years. I own a two family investment home in Cos Cob right around the block from where I live. The two bedroom with a garage rents for $3000 and the two bedroom with basement storage rents for 2500. Not terribly bad ……Houses by themselves rent for a whole different number lol The one around the block rented for 14,000 ( 3650 square ft) The train ride is not bad at all to NYC, very civilized, very clean train station, no graffiti, nonsense or anything like that ( this does not apply as soon as you leave Connecticut and enter New York ) ….The town is super safe. The restaurants are excellent. Health care is amazing ( but expensive) you’re basically moving to a bubble. BUT It’s a very nice bubble, and if you should purchase here the taxes are ridiculously low…. Downside is that there’s not a lot of activity here for young people. That may not be an issue because a lot of young people use the Internet to meet people. Best of luck to you.
