Apparently, the summer of 2023 is the year on the dolphin in local waters. While it is not totally unusual to see dolphins in Long Island Sound, or nearby Rhode Island/NY/NJ waters, this has been an unbelievable year for sightings from what has been on the news. What is a bit more unusual - is that these sightings are not the typical lone or 2-3 dolphins spotted. A pack of 12 dolphins were spotted in Niantic Bay and off Darian in June, then several times of Clinton and Westbrook in July, and just 10 days ago a large group was spotted off South Lyme. Sunday at Bills in Westbrook, apparently a large group of people yet again spotted dolphins in the Westbrook Harbor. I missed this by like 5 min.
While sea surface temps reach the max peak in September on the East Coast south of Boston, they are still a bit warmer than normal this year. I drive coastal roads every day and fish off the piers/docks in South Lyme/Westbrook now and then, and have not seen anything yet myself. LOL.
