Hello all,

My husband's job might take him to NYC. Thankfully, our family has been blessed and we've enjoyed a substantial income and upscale living. We are looking for the same lifestyle up north and because of its reputation we are considering moving to Fairfield county. Also, we want to continue to live in a house as opposed to an apartment in the city.
Currently we live in a very seclusive community in Miami and prior to here, we lived in a similar affluent section of Houston.
Our main concern however, is that there doesn't seem to be much ethnic diversity in the more desirable towns of CT. We are a hispanic family and don't want our kids to be the only latinos in school. Both of the communities that we have lived in so far have had a substantial amount wealthy latino families, this doesn't seem to be the case in CT. I know there are pockets of hispanic communities in certain cities up there, but they are not the type of areas we are looking for.
Any suggestions on where we might find an upscale community with a hispanic population? or is CT just not for us?

I'm not comfortable with making a blanket statement about Greenwich, Darien, Westport, etc. but generally speaking, latino presence is strongest in the cities(Stamford, Norwalk, etc.). I can safely tell you that New Canaan would not have the demographic that you desire. It does have some families with latino/asian/african-american heritages, but it's very predominantly a relatively friendly wasp community.

I would also suggest posting your question on the NY/NJ boards, as i don't feel that you will find what you're seeking in the towns closest to the border. If you're set on Ct., i would say begin your search in Fairfield, and move east or north from that starting point.

You might want to look at Westchester county, but I think you might find more of what you are looking for in NJ.

Try Scarsdale, NY!

It's the wealthiest town (by income) in the United States and does have some (but not a lot) of upper-class Hispanic, African-Americans and Asians.

Unlike south Florida, there is not a large upscale strictly Latin community in Connecticut. I believe that is true for the whole metro-New York area too. You will find some Latins in just about every town though so your children will not be the only ones, but certainly they would not be part of the majority unless you live in an urban area. I suggest that post this question on the New York boards though and see if anyone there knows of towns that suit your needs. Good luck, Jay

Interesting question.

I'm going to disagree with what some of the others have posted. Puerto Ricans have had a large presence in CT since the 1940's. Today there are many successful Latino professionals.... law firms based in CT and Puerto Rico for example. The mayor of the state capital is from Corozal, Puerto Rico and there are a number of other influential Latino politicians and organizations in the state. Among the more recent immigrants to CT there are some Peruvians, Dominicans, Colombians, and Brazilians that have done very well for themselves in the local business community.

Now, more specifically addressing your search for a diverse place to live in Fairfield County. I would suggest Stamford or Norwalk. Both are small cities but have a more rural feel in the northern areas. Check out the north end of Stamford or the silvermine area of Norwalk. Both locations are an easy commute into NYC via the Metro-North commuter train and are diverse communities.

I think you'll have a VERY hard time finding a VERY affluent area with more then a handful of hispanic originated individuals. Perhaps search NJ or the NY side of the CT state line.
Most of CT's diversity is in large cities like the PP mentioned.

if you're looking a buy a house over $1MM, you can safely assume that this house will be in an area that is 90% white. Maybe in Stamford and Norwalk you can find an exception, but this is the trend.

I'd say try NJ

According to US Census Bureau (2000):

Greenwich (one of the wealthiest towns in the nation): 3,846 Hispanic/Latino residents about 6% of the town's total population. There are some very wealthy, successful Latino's living in CT. It isn't Miami, but regardless I think the op would find her family to be very welcome in any town in CT.

Norwalk: 19,000 Hispanic/Latino residents

Stamford: 19,635 Hispanic/Latino residents (around 15%)

Fairfield: 1,340 Hispanic/Latino residents

NY Times (2006):

THE WEEK; Education Commissioner Heads to Greenwich - New York Times

Quote:
She said 22 percent of Greenwich's students were minorities and 17 percent came from homes where English was not the primary language.

I have only been to the area a limited number of times but Greenwich is very wealthy and very diverse. I think that is the perfect town for you. Stamford is also affluent but the schools are not good there. I have family in Stamford and they send their kids to private school.

I looked it up and Scarsdale NY is not even close to being the wealthiest town in the USA. Sorry to burst your bubble. It is very affluent though.
